Objectives of the University In this era of globalization, there are many avenues opening up for skilled legal personnel. The competition is very high in this globalized world. So, law students should be highly skilled and professionally competent to excel. The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University is committed to the cause of providing quality legal education to help the students to find a firm footing in today's competitive world. Moreover, the paramount function of an University is to be a centre of excellence and to bring forth the talents of the students. It should also chisel them in such a way that they not only excel in studies but also become socially conscious individuals, whose service benefits the society. Introduction of B.A., B.L., (Hons.) Degree Course In the year 2002, a new and glorious chapter was ushered in the history of legal education in Tamil Nadu, with the momentous decision taken by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to establish a School of Excellence in Law and bring it to the level of the existing National Law Schools. This move was primarily intended to provide quality legal education to the students in Tamil Nadu on par with the National Law Schools in the country. In this course, stress is laid on high quality teaching, which is complemented by extensive training in clinical method with the objective of producing well-equipped lawyers, capable law teachers and competent legal personnel for the corporate sector. The School of Excellence in Law offering the five year integrated B.A.,B.L.,(Hons.) Degree Course from the academic year 2002 2003 was inaugurated by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 21.11.2002 and it is run by the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University. School of Excellence in Law (SOEL) - Location The School of Excellence in Law is functioning in The Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University campus, "Poompozhil" 5, P.S. Kumaraswamy Raja Salai, Chennai 600 028. The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University campus located in one of the prime localities of Chennai city is well connected by road, rail and air. The terminal bus stand and Egmore and Central Railway Stations are only 10 kilometers away from the campus. The Metro Railway Station (Greenways Station) is just a kilometer away from the School of Excellence in Law. The airport is about 15 kilometers away from the campus. The High Court Complex, District, Sessions and City Civil Courts are situated about 10 kilometers from the University campus and this facilitates easy and effective interaction between the Bar and the School of Excellence in law. | ||||||||

Duration of the Course Duration of the course is for a period of five academic years. Each academic year is divided into 2 semesters and each semester consists of 90 working days. On successful completion of the course, B.A.,B.L., (Hons.) Degree will be awarded. Teacher Taught Ratio The University has thoughtfully fixed the student strength as 70 for the School of Excellence in Law (2 Sections each around 40 students), so that individual attention can be paid to each and every student. In addition to the 70 seats, ten seats are reserved under the NRI Quota (Non Resident Indians). Pass Percentage SOEL's emphasis on academic excellence has paid dividends, which is revealed in the performance of the students in the University examination. The over all pass percentage of the students of the first batch passed out in May 2007 is 96% of which 68% secured First Class and 11% secured outstanding marks. ADMISSION PROCEDURE
1) ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION a. Qualification: A candidate should have passed Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent examination recognized by The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai and should have secured not less than 70% of the total marks in the aggregate of all the subjects. The candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities should have secured not less than 60% of the total marks in the aggregate of all subjects. b. Age Limit: A candidate should not have completed 20 years of age as on 1st June 2008 (i.e. should have been born on or after 01.06.1988). The candidates belonging to SC/ST communities should not have completed 22 years of age as on 1st June 2008 (i.e. should have been born on or after 01.06.1986) Note: v The candidates are advised to go through the regulations contained in the prospectus before submitting their application forms seeking admission to the B.A.,B.L., (Hons.) 2) ISSUE OF APPLICATION FORMS
Application Forms will be issued from 28.05.2008
The Application form for the B.A.,B.L., (Hons.) Degree Course may be obtained from The Registrar, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Chennai - 600 028 by submitting a requisition letter and a demand draft for a sum of Rs.500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only) in favour of The Registrar, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, drawn on any of the nationalized bank, payable at Chennai, which sum includes the cost of the application of Rs.50/- and Rs. 450/- towards registration and processing fees. Candidates who intend to receive the application through post should send a requisition letter and a demand draft for a sum of Rs.550/- (Rupees Five Hundred and Fifty only). Candidates belonging to SC/ST communities are exempted from paying the application fee and should pay the registration fee and processing fee of Rs. 300/-. To obtain the application, they should submit (i) a requisition letter, (ii) a copy of the Community Certificate and (iii) a demand draft for a sum of Rs.300/- (Rupees Three Hundred only) in favour of The Registrar, The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, drawn on any of the nationalized banks, payable at Chennai and those, who intend to receive the application through post should send (i) a requisition letter, (ii) a copy of the Community Certificate and (iii) a demand draft for a sum of Rs.350/- (Rupees Three Hundred and Fifty only). 3) SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORMS Last date for Issue and Receipt of Application Forms 13.06.2008
Application form has been designed to suit the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) system. Hence a candidate should fill the application with utmost care after reading the Annexure IV - "Instructions to Candidates for Filling the Application Form" issued alongwith the application. Degree Course is made on the basis of merit assessed on the following criteria, as per the G.O.Ms.No.83 LAW (LS) DEPARTMENT dt.19.04.2007: For B.A.,B.L. (Hons) Degree Course, "the percentage of marks obtained by the candidates in the Plus Two examinations in aggregate of all the subjects, excluding languages, will be taken into account. Academic discussion in the classroom is given priority. 2. Submission of projects and presentations in class is mandatory for all students for each and every Humanities and Social Sciences paper for which 10 marks will be awarded. 3. For Law subjects taking part in internal/classwise Moot Court Competitions and presenting memorials is mandatory for each and every student and 10 marks will be awarded for that. 4. The Students are also encouraged to undertake project assignments under the supervision of faculty members, so that their skills of research, analysis and writing are honed. 5. Re-inforcement method is being adopted to maintain and improve the standards, so as to enable the students to reach the desired level of progress wherever found necessary.
Competitions The students are given adequate exposure to courtroom practice by way of participation in Moot Courts organized by the Law University both at the State and National levels. To improve the oral and written skills of advocacy, abundant opportunities are being provided for participation in elocution, quiz and essay competitions, within the state and at the national and international levels. METHODS OF EVALUATION v Continuous assessment of the learning process is being done by following the semester pattern. v Periodical tests on all the subjects prescribed for a semester are being held and the marks secured by the students are added to the university examination marks. v Project submission and presentation (Humanities and Social Sciences) and internal Moot Court participation and submission of memorials (Law papers) prescribed for a semester are evaluated and added to the university examination marks. v Viva-voce is held for each and every paper in order to evaluate the oral skills and knowledge of the student in every paper, for which marks are also awarded. v The students are also trained in the art of teaching by affording them opportunities to teach in the classroom. v The students are encouraged to refer books and journals in the library. Seminars / Symposiums / Workshops on prescribed Subjects in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years Participation in seminars, symposiums and workshops is part and parcel of the curricula. This has been done in order to inculcate a spirit of research in the study of law and in related areas. This will also help in developing the lawyering skills of the students. The topics for the seminar have been chosen keeping in mind the developing trends in law. The students of the 3rd, 4th and 5th years are required to present papers on topics relating to the subjects prescribed and also on other current topics, in order to enable them to develop their research and communication skills. Clinical Course In addition to the Practical Training Programme prescribed by the Bar Council of India, clinical work has been made part of the curriculum to provide abundant opportunities to the students for getting trained in the skills of advocacy. ii) Computer Training & Internet Computer training forms part of the co-curricular activities. The students are also trained to use the Internet in order to obtain information in various branches of law. This will help them to update their knowledge and also to collect materials on various subjects. iii) Access to Legal Websites SOEL subscribes to the following law sites Indialawsite.com, Lexis Nexis, Manupatra.com which provides upto date judgments not only from the cases of the Supreme Court, High Court in India but also provides access to Judgments and electronic journals of various countries. iv) Linguaphone 21 Programme Good communication skill helps in effective communication and interpretation, two very vital traits for success in any profession, especially for the lawyering profession. Mastery over the English language is the password for landing plum posts in any part of the globe. So Linguaphone 21 programme is being utilized by the Law University to improve the fluency and the skills of the students in using English Language. v) Placement Cell The Placement Cell functioning in SOEL is actively striving for placing the students in good law firms. REGULATIONS i) Attendance A student has to earn 80% of attendance in each semester to take the examination. Where a student earns 75% and above but below 80% of attendance, the academic committee may recommend condonation of attendance for genuine reasons. If a student fails to earn 75% attendance, he/she will not be eligible to take the semester examination and he/she must redo the entire semester. ii) Conduct Continuous good behaviour and conduct of a student is a pre-requisite for taking the examination in each semester. iii) Working Days The School of Excellence in Law will have 5 days-a-week schedule. The University examination is of 2 ½ hours duration for each paper carrying 70 marks. Prohibition of Ragging In Consonance with the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, candidates are instructed that they shall not indulge in any form of ragging activities. "If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority, the concerned student, shall be given liberty to explain and if his explanation is not found satisfactory, the authority would expel him from the Institution". ANNEXURE IV INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES FOR FILLING THE APPLICATION FORM Application form has been designed to suit the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) System. Hence candidates should fill the application with utmost care after reading the instructions given below. Kindly see the specimen OMR sheet at the end of this Annexure - IV. GUIDELINES TO FILL THE FORM FILLING: USE BALL POINT PEN FOR SHADING : USE HB PENCILS 2. Name: In Item No.2 of the application form there are 25 boxes. The candidate has to enter his/her name in the boxes in English only. Only one letter should be entered in each box. After the name, the candidate should enter dot [.] in one box and then should write his/her initial. Similarly, the candidate should also shade the letters of his/her name provided in the brackets. If the candidate commits any mistake while filling the application, the University is not responsible for the consequences arising thereon. 3. Date of Birth: In Item No.3 of the application form there are 6 boxes. The candidate should fill his/her Date of Birth. The candidate should enter one numeral in each box and shade the corresponding brackets. 4. Sex: In Item No.4, male candidates should write `1' and female candidate should write `2' in the given box. Male candidates should shade the brackets opposite to the word "Male" and female candidates should shade the brackets opposite to the word "Female". 5. Religion: In item No.5, the candidate should enter the Code Number of his Religion in the given box and also shade the brackets corresponding to his/her Religion. | ||||||||||

Community : In Item No. 6, the candidates belonging to ST, SC, MBC / DNC, BC (Christian), BC (Muslim), BC (Others) should shade the brackets opposite to the respective communities to which they belong to and those who do not come under the reserved categories should shade the box opposite to the word `OTHRS'. Citizenship: In Item No.8, if the candidate is an Indian citizen, he/she should shade the brackets against the word `Indian' and if the candidate is not an Indian citizen, he/she should shade in the brackets against the word `Others' in the box provided. 9. Qualifying Examination: In Item No.9, the candidate has to enter the Code Number in the box of the Course he/she studied in the Qualifying Examination and shall also shade the brackets against the name of the Course he/she studied. | ||||||||||

13. H.S.C. Vocational Course: In Item No.13, the candidates who have undergone Vocational Course have to enter the Maximum Marks and Marks obtained in Related Subject I, Related Subject II, Vocational Theory, Vocational Practical-I and Vocational Practical II correspondingly. The candidate shall also enter Maximum Marks and Marks obtained in Overall Total (including Languages) in the boxes provided. Similarly, the candidates have to carefully shade the corresponding brackets in Related Subject I, Related Subject II, Vocational Theory, Vocational Practical I, Vocational Practical II and Overall Total (including Languages). The candidates are advised to enter and shade item No.13 very carefully, since it is computed for ranking purpose. 14. Special Reservation: In Item No.14, the candidate should enter the special category code under which he/she claims reservation and also shade the corresponding brackets. In case if a candidate claims more than one Special Reservation, he/she has to claim two choices. (For Special Category Codes Refer Annexure II). 15. Medium of Instruction: The candidate has to enter the code given for Medium of Instruction of his/her qualifying examination and shade the appropriate brackets.

Examination Code No. T.N.HSC (Academic) 1 T.N.HSC (Vocational) 2 CBSE 3 ISC 4 Others 5 9(a) Passed in the Qualifying Examination: All those candidates who have passed the qualifying examination must enter `1' and those who have not must enter `2' in the given box and shade the appropriate brackets. 10. H.S.C./Equivalent: In Item No.10, the candidate has to enter the Register Number of the H.S.C./Equivalent Examination passed and the Month and Year of passing the Examination. He/She has to shade the corresponding brackets. 11. Name & Address for Communication: In Item No. 11 of the application form in the space provided thereof, the candidate has to enter his/her name and mailing address in Block Letters (in English only) and enter the Pin Code in the boxes provided.
In Item No.12, the candidate has to legibly enter the Maximum Marks and Marks obtained in Subject I, Subject II, Subject III and Subject IV i.e. Main Subjects (excluding languages) correspondingly. The candidate shall also enter Overall Total, Maximum Marks and Marks obtained (including Languages) in the boxes provided. Similarly, the candidates have to carefully shade the corresponding brackets of Maximum Marks and Marks obtained in Subject I, Subject II, Subject III, Subject IV and Overall Total (including Languages). 17. First Graduate in Family: The candidate has to enter Code `1' if he/she is the first person in his/her family going study in the College and `2' if not. The candidate has to shade the appropriate brackets.
